DNA Fibres

by David Witham

It’s not often I get excited about a new fly tying material, especially another type of flashy stuff. There’s more than enough on the market to confuse the crap out of the average fish let alone the novice fly tier, but the DNA materials I have been “playing” with over the last month or two is a bit different.

For a start it’s thinner yet stiffer than your Sparkleflash, polarflash etc and the mix of materials make it translucent in the water with just a hint of flash. The materials used to put this stuff together also looks a lot like the scales of a fish and therefore you get a fairly realistic look to the finished fly.

I have tied quite a few baitfish, shrimp and even poppers with the DNA Holofusion and they all look good. The list of species captured on flies made of this product is growing rapidly and goes from tuna to Murray Cod. I think it’ll be a hit down here with the salmon, kingfish, frigates etc this season and I can’t wait to wet some on my trip north, who knows maybe the barra will take a liking to them also.

Get some of this stuff if you can find it! It’s good gear. So far I know that Fishing Tackle Australia in Coffs Harbour, Tie’n’Fly Outfitters on the Sunshine Coast and soon, West Gosford Bait and Tackle will have stock.
