Wyong River

By Trent Morson

The day started out a little sketchy looking at the radar overnight, but we rallied and met at the ramp in Tacoma right on 6 am. Anthony and Matt headed out first an went up river towards the dam. Ivan and Malcolm, Terry and Simon as well as Len and myself worked both banks of the river from the co-op through to the opening to the lake. Col and Nick ventured further to the other side of the lake.

In what may qualify as a world record, there was no wind present on a club day! There was a short period of drizzle, but easily handled by the eager and steadfast CCFR’s. Not everyone stayed dry, but more of that later…

Up-river.

Anthony and Matt went up river to seek EP and found success. Matt achieved a long-distance release of what must have been huge, while Anthony decked a bream and an EP. Result.

Mid-river.

Tailor were the flavour of the day having been landed by both Terry and Len. Malcolm, Simon and Yours Truly caught my usual quota – zip. Len, in his first cast, nailed a new species – Long Tom. Congrats!

Lake.

After fossicking at the mouth of the river with little success, Col decided to look at the other side of the lake. Fishing improved leading to Nick’s first saltwater fish on fly, a tailor on clouser. Congrats! Col decked a couple of bream and a mullet. Well played, skipper.

Len and I looked in a channel near the lead up to The Entrance, but flies couldn’t hold bottom due to current flow and were constantly fouled by weed.

Notable mentions.

In arguably the most ironic moment in the club’s history, Terry (former copper) got a speeding ticket in a dubious call about 4 knots. Unlucky Malcolm took an unplanned dip and pulled stumps early. Massive thanks to Mac and Janice for making the trek to cater as well as Ivan for the onions.

A well-attended and  heartily enjoyed outing and thanks to Len for organising.
